Based in Asheville, NC, Chef Ashleigh Shanti’s cuisine pays homage to the rich African-American culinary traditions of Southern Appalachia and honors her own history as a Southern, African-American woman—cooking in the theme of Sankofa, “go back and get it” in the Twi language: integrating new food techniques and methods, while looking back to history to reclaim lost and forgotten traditions.
“I do think that anyone can be good at cooking. But there is something that’s very special about being able to tell a story through a dish, and share those emotions with you. I think that’s a certain gift that a true chef possesses.”
